Regalia (Academic Dress)

Regalia is required for participation in the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony. If you do not have your own regalia (cap, gown, tassel, and hood) you should arrange for purchase or rental of the items you need.

  • Participants from the Lawrence campus may purchase their regalia at the KU Bookstore in the Kansas Union.
  • Participants from the Medical Center should work with the KUMC Bookstore. Call 913-588-2548 for more information.

Ceremony Procedures

Report to the Lied Center between 6:30 and 7:00 pm, but no later than 7:00 pm and proceed as follows:

  1. Go to the check-in table and pick up the name card that you will use in the ceremony. Verify the spelling and phonetic pronunciation of your name, as well as your email address (for use by the photographer).
  2. Follow the signs to determine where you should line up. The line-up is organized by School/College.
  3. Locate your faculty hooder in the line-up area for your School/College. Be certain to communicate in advance with the faculty member who will hood you to determine where you plan to meet. Please do not meet your faculty hooder in the lobby. Wait with your faculty hooder, and any of your hooder's other graduates, for the procession to begin.
  4. Rows will be called up to the stage by School or College. Please take a moment to watch the hooding demonstration video and consider sharing it with your hooder.

The procession will begin promptly at 7:30 pm. Students will enter the Lied Center with their faculty hooders. You, your faculty hooder, and any other candidates your hooder is hooding must queue and process together so event staff can seat you appropriately for crossing the stage.

The ceremony will close with the recession of all members of the stage party, the doctoral graduates, and their faculty hooders. You will proceed outside of the Lied Center where your guests can join you. Some lighting for family photographs will be available.

Diplomas

You will not receive your diploma at the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony. You must file a request for a diploma with the Office of the University Registrar. When you file your request, you may indicate whether you would like to pick up your diploma on campus or receive it by mail.

  • Lawrence and Edwards campus students: Request a diploma here.
  • Medical Center students: Request a diploma here.

Graduates must register by the deadline above in order to participate in the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony.
More information about registration is available on this page under "Students".
